J is the youngest letter in the alphabet. For most of its history it was a decorative form of I, and printers only separated the two in the seventeenth century, which is why every J name in the Bible was spelled with an I before that: Iacob, Iohn, Iesus. A name built out of J is standing on the newest ground English has.

Where it comes from

The story of Jaydah

The Latin alphabet had one letter for both the vowel and the consonant, and scribes wrote a longer tail on the I at the start of a word for the look of it. That tail became a separate letter, and the split was not complete in English printing until well into the seventeenth century. English therefore has almost no old J names of its own: every one it has came in from Hebrew or Latin through a spelling reform. What it does have is a very large number of new ones. Jay became a free opening syllable in American naming, attachable to almost anything, and Jayden, Jayla, Jaylen, Jaycee and Jaydah were all built with it inside about twenty years.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Jaydah has no established source. Jada, the name it respells, is itself two things: a man's name in the genealogies of First Chronicles, and a modern reading of the word jade. Neither has been shown to be the source of this spelling, and the -ah ending is an American addition that changes nothing.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jaydah went to 8 girls in 2025, but Jayda, Jaida and Jaidah are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 247, which makes it the 715th most-given girls’ name of the year — 10,202 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 6,507 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 200,908 for Jaydah itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Every sound in it is ordinary English, so nobody has to be taught it.
  • Jay works immediately as a short form and stands alone.
  • Two syllables with a clear falling stress, which sits well in front of most surnames.
What to consider
  • Jada is much commoner and this spelling will be corrected toward it.
  • The h is silent and will simply be dropped by most people who write it.
  • There is no documented meaning, which is worth settling before a child asks.
