Spanish colonists in the Americas found a green stone the Aztecs prized and named it for the ailment it was thought to cure. French took the phrase as le jade and English as jade. As a given name Jade appeared in the twentieth century, and Jada and Jaida followed as softer three-letter and four-letter variants — the American habit of adding a vowel to make a word-name look like a person's name.
