Where it comes from

The story of Izabel

Elisheva became Elisabet in Greek, Elisabeth in Latin, and in Occitan and Spanish the opening syllable dropped away — a common enough change — leaving Elisabel and then Isabel. It became one of the great royal names of Spain, Portugal and England. Polish writes it Izabela and Portuguese Izabel, using the z that both languages prefer for that sound, and Izabel reaches American records from both.

Meaningscholars disagree

my God is an oath

Elizabeth is from Hebrew Elisheva, generally read as my God is an oath or my God is abundance. Isabel is the medieval Iberian development of it, and some scholars treat the two as separate names by the thirteenth century rather than one; the derivation itself is not seriously disputed.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Izabel went to 47 girls in 2025, but Isabel, Isabell and Izabell are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 1,894, which makes it the 169th most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,127 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 849 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 34,197 for Izabel itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented line reaching back to a Hebrew name of the first century and earlier.
  • Iza, Belle and Izzy are all ready short forms in different languages.
  • It is readable in Polish, Portuguese, Spanish and English without change.
What to consider
  • Isabel is the standard English and Spanish spelling and will be written for her regularly.
  • The stress differs between Polish and Iberian usage.
  • Isabella, Isabelle and Izabel are all very widely used and get confused.
