The -bel ending of Isabel was misread as French belle, beautiful — and the misreading became productive. Once English speakers heard beauty in it, they started building new names on the pattern: Annabel, Christabel, Maribel. A false etymology turned into a working suffix.

Where it comes from

The story of Izabell

A folk etymology becomes serious when people start generating new words from it, and this one did. The -bel of Isabel is an accident of sound change, but by the later Middle Ages English and Scottish naming treated it as a meaningful element and applied it freely: Annabel, Christabel, Rosabel, Maribel, Claribel. Spenser used Claribel; Coleridge's Christabel of 1816 made that one visible; Rosabel and Florabel appear in nineteenth-century usage. None of them descends from Isabel, and all of them exist because of it. Izabell peaks in America in 2010, in the general revival of the Isabel family.

Meaning

Hebrew "my God is an oath"

Isabel is a reduction of Elisabeth, from Hebrew Elisheva. The final -bel is the tail of that name and has nothing to do with French belle or Latin bella, beautiful. Annabel is generally from Amabel, lovable, or a compound of Anna, and was reshaped toward the same -bel; Christabel was coined in medieval romance and popularized by Coleridge in 1816. Izabell is a modern respelling with z and a clipped ending.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Izabell went to 14 girls in 2025, but Isabel, Isabell and Izabel are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 1,894, which makes it the 169th most-given girls’ name of the year — 7,322 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 849 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 114,805 for Izabell itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It descends from one of the best-documented names in Europe.
  • Bell and Izzy are immediate short forms.
  • The z spelling connects it to the Polish and Hungarian forms.
What to consider
  • Isabel and Isabelle are the standard spellings in English.
  • The doubled l adds a letter and no sound.
  • It is widely believed to contain the word for beautiful, and it does not.
