The story of Isabell
Isabel became the great name of medieval Iberian and French royalty, and English queens carried it too. Isabella I of Castile funded the 1492 voyage; several Isabels ruled or married into the crowns of Portugal and Spain. English use fell away and returned enormously in the twentieth century. The Isabell spelling ran alongside Isabel and Isabelle, peaking around 2006.
Meaning
my God is an oath
Through Isabel and Elizabeth, from the Hebrew Elisheva — el, 'God', and sheva, 'oath' or 'seven'. Occitan and Spanish speakers dropped the initial vowel and reshaped the ending, producing Isabel as a separate name that then developed its own history.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Isabell went to 87 girls in 2025, but Isabel, Izabel and Izabell are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 1,894, which makes it the 169th most-given girls’ name of the year — 1,970 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 849 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 18,474 for Isabell itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
