The story of Neva
Nineteenth-century American naming drew on vocabulary from several languages at once, and short vowel-heavy names were particularly favored: Neva, Nova, Vera, Reva, Alva. Neva appears in American registers from the 1870s and peaked around 1890. The Spanish Nieves route and the Russian river route both plausibly fed it, and the registers preserve no way of telling which family meant which.

snow
The Spanish nieva, from the verb nevar, 'to snow', gives the reading most often quoted, and Nieves — 'snows' — is a real Spanish Marian name from the feast of Our Lady of the Snows. The Russian river Neva is a separate word, probably from a Finnic term for a bog or a swamp. The name may also be a reversal of Aven or a clipping of Geneva.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off
- The snow reading is vivid and connects to a real Spanish Marian tradition.
- Two clean syllables and no hard consonants at all.
- It is genuinely rare now while being entirely traditional in the registers.
- The origin is split between unrelated languages and nothing settles it.
- Two pronunciations of the first vowel are recorded in American use.
- It is period-coded to the late nineteenth century.
