Where it comes from

The story of Aleyda

Adalheidis was a tenth-century empress and saint, and her name spread across Europe in every possible shortening: Alice in France and England, Adelheid in Germany, Aleida in the Low Countries, Alida in Hungary. Spanish-speaking families in Colombia and Venezuela took up Aleyda in the twentieth century with the y that Spanish prefers for that sound, and it reaches American records from there.

Meaningscholars disagree

of noble kind

Adelaide is from Germanic adal, noble, and heid, a kind or sort — so of noble type rather than simply noble. Dutch and German shortened it to Aleida and Aleid; the Spanish Aleyda follows that line, though a separate derivation has occasionally been proposed.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Aleyda went to 47 girls in 2025, but Aleida is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 116, which makes it the 844th most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,452 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 13,856 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 34,197 for Aleyda itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented line back to a tenth-century empress, through half a dozen languages.
  • Every letter is said, so Spanish speakers read it correctly at first sight.
  • It is distinctive in American records while completely ordinary in Colombian ones.
What to consider
  • Aleida and Aleyda are both used and the spelling will be asked for.
  • English readers meeting it cold are unsure what to do with the ey.
  • It is close to Aleida, Alida and Aleyna, all of which are separate names.
