The story of Jager
Eighteenth-century European armies fought in lines and volleys, which required discipline rather than marksmanship. Jager units were the exception: raised from Hessian and Prussian foresters who already owned rifles and knew how to use cover, they fought in loose order and aimed at individuals. Their effectiveness in broken country was noticed everywhere, and by 1800 France had chasseurs, Italy cacciatori, Britain rifle regiments and Spain cazadores, all meaning hunters and all doing the same job. The German word is therefore one of the few occupational surnames that also names a military tradition, and it survived into modern armies as a formation title long after the tactic became universal. The surname itself is ordinary and old, in use since the middle ages for anyone who hunted for a living or managed a lord's game.
Meaning
German Jager, hunter
Jager is the German occupational surname for a hunter or gamekeeper, from jagen, to hunt. Written properly it carries an umlaut on the a, which American records drop. The word doubles as a military term for light infantry, and the same idea gave French chasseurs and Italian cacciatori, both also meaning hunters. The American peak of the given name is 2001.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Marwan test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jager's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Marwan climbed just as high around 1974, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Marwan's path sketches the road Jager is walking now.
Jager sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
