Jagger
Masculine · “carter”
Jagger is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 8,238 boys against 210 girls since 1880.
Before it was a first name, Jagger was a job: in the Yorkshire hills, a jagger was the man who moved goods by packhorse, one load — one jag — at a time. The word hardened into a surname, the surname went out into the world with English emigration, and in the last few decades American parents began handing it forward as a given name. It has the same two-beat, -er ending as Parker and Hunter, with a harder middle.

The story of Jagger
Jagger began in northern England as a plain description of work, and by the late medieval period it had settled into a hereditary surname, densest in the West Riding of Yorkshire. It traveled with English-speaking migration into North America and Australia as a family name and stayed one for centuries. Its worldwide recognition owes an enormous amount to the Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger, whose fame from the 1960s onward made the surname familiar in households that had never met a Yorkshire packhorse. The step from surname to American given name came much later, part of the broader move to use -er surnames up front.
Meaning
carter, peddler — one who hauled loads by packhorse

Pronouncing Jagger
JAG-er
Hard G, stress on the first syllable, rhyming with swagger and dagger. The double G keeps the first vowel short, so it is rarely misread — though a few readers reach for the German-looking JAY-ger or YAY-ger on first sight.

The Marie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jagger's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Marie climbed just as high around 1902, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Marie's path sketches the road Jagger is walking now.
Jagger sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The spelling matches the sound closely for English speakers; most people write it correctly after hearing it once.
- A documented occupational meaning with a clear paper trail back to Middle English — no guesswork about where it comes from.
- Sits neatly in the established -er pattern of English surname names, so it needs no explaining as a category.
- Instantly recognizable across the English-speaking world through the surname, even where it is not used as a first name.
- Clips easily to Jag or Jags without inventing anything.
- For a great many people, the name means one rock musician and always will. That association is affectionate more often than not, but it is unavoidable, and it will follow the name into rooms full of adults.
- Its use as a first name is very recent, so it reads as belonging to a particular stretch of years rather than as an old family standard — worth knowing if you want a name that sounds ageless at forty.
- Jag doubles as car shorthand, which tends to produce the same joke more than once.
- The -er surname field is crowded, so Jagger may get momentarily blurred with Carter, Parker and Hunter in a roll call — a mishearing, not a real problem.
