The story of Marie
The line about cake was not hers. It appears in a book by Rousseau written when the future queen was a child in Vienna, attributed there to an unnamed great princess, and it was decades old before anyone connected it to her. It stuck because it was useful: a régime being dismantled needs a figure who can be shown as monstrously oblivious, and a foreign queen was the obvious candidate. The other Marie was Polish, was refused a university place at home because she was a woman, took her degrees in Paris, and won the physics prize with her husband and the chemistry prize alone eight years later. She is the only person with prizes in two separate sciences, and she died of the radiation she discovered.

Fashion outlook
Marie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is recognized in essentially every European language without alteration.
- It is short, soft and completely settled in sound.
- It has been in continuous use for as long as records exist anywhere.
- No meaning can honestly be given, whatever other pages assert.
- It is extremely common as a middle name, which colors how it is read as a first one.
- The record holds a few boys as well, and the boy is much the smaller side.
