Where it comes from

The story of Graeson

The reeve was one of the most important people in an English village: appointed or elected from among the tenants, he organized the ploughing, accounted to the lord, and was answerable for the manor's dues. Chaucer's Reeve is a shrewd and unloved figure, and the office appears throughout the manorial records. The shire-reeve was a different and grander thing, the crown's representative in a county, and the contraction to sheriff carried the word into English law and, eventually, into the American West. Grieve survived in Scotland as the word for a farm overseer. Graeson peaks in America in 2011.

English "son of the steward"

Grayson is usually read as the son of a grieve or reeve, a manor official, from Old English gerēfa. A derivation from the son of a man named Gray is also proposed. Graeson is a modern American respelling with the ae digraph. Gerēfa also gave shire-reeve, contracted to sheriff, and portreeve, the official of a port town.
