The story of Filiberto
The beraht element ends up in English in two different guises. As a name element it kept the Germanic form and appears as -bert; as an ordinary word it went through the English sound change that swapped the r and the vowel, giving bright. So Albert and bright are the same word twice, once frozen in a name and once still alive in the vocabulary. The first elements of these names are a smaller set: adal, noble, gives Albert; hrod, fame, gives Robert; heri, army, gives Herbert; gisil, a pledge, gives Gilbert; nord, north, gives Norbert. Filu, much, is rarer, and it survives in modern German as viel. A name like Filiberto is therefore transparent to a German speaker in a way it is not to an English one, though English has the pieces if you know where to look for them.

fee-lee-BEHR-toh
Four syllables, stress on the third. The French Philibert is fee-lee-BAIR with the final consonant silent, and the Ph- spelling there is a learned mistake: the name is Germanic and has no Greek phi in it.

The Stevens test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Filiberto's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Stevens climbed just as high around 1949, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Stevens's path sketches the road Filiberto is walking now.

- It has a documented history as a saint's name.
- Four syllables is long for American use.
