The story of Stevens
Behind it is Stephanos, a Greek word for a wreath or crown, and behind that the first Christian martyr, whose name and whose death were connected by every writer who described them. The name became Etienne in France, Esteban in Spain, Istvan in Hungary and Stephen in England, and in England it also produced a second spelling with a v that writes the sound the ph has always been given. The most consequential American to carry the surname as a name was Thaddeus Stevens, who led the radical wing of Congress after the Civil War and pushed the amendments that made freed people citizens; he arranged to be buried in a small cemetery in Pennsylvania because it was one of the few near his home that would take Black and white graves together, and had the reason cut into the stone.

English surnames took two routes to the same idea, one adding the word son and one adding only the possessive s, and the second is commoner in the south and west and in Wales. The mark that once showed it was a possessive was never written into surnames, so the grammar is invisible and the meaning has drained out.
