Evonne
Feminine · “Germanic iv”
Yves means yew. The English longbow was made of yew, churchyards are planted with it, every part of the tree except the flesh of the berry is poisonous, and a name built on it is effectively a name about archery.

The story of Evonne
Taxus baccata is slow-growing, extremely long-lived and almost entirely toxic; the only part that is not poisonous is the red flesh around the seed. Its wood combines a springy sapwood and a compression-resistant heartwood in a single stave, which makes it the best natural material for a self bow, and the English longbow was cut from it, largely imported because domestic supplies could not meet demand. Yews are planted in British churchyards, often predating the churches, and the usual explanations are that the ground was already sacred, that the walls kept livestock away from the poison, or that the trees supplied bow staves. All three are argued. The Germanic name element behind Yves and Yvonne refers to the tree, and the archer reading follows from what the tree was for.
Meaning
Germanic iv, yew
Evonne is a respelling of Yvonne, the French feminine of Yves, from a Germanic element iv or iwa, a yew tree. The yew was the standard material for bows, so the name is often glossed as archer. The E spelling replaces the initial Y without changing the sound. The peak is 1936.

Evonne's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Coletta climbed just as high around 1902, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Coletta's path sketches the road Evonne is walking now.
