The story of Coletta
Colette of Corbie was a fifteenth-century French nun who reformed the Poor Clares, founding or restoring a network of convents across France, Flanders and Savoy at a moment when the order had badly loosened. Her name kept the diminutive alive in Catholic Europe for five centuries. Italian made Coletta, with the doubled consonant that Italian uses to lengthen a sound, and American records receive the name from Italian and German Catholic families around the turn of the twentieth century. It has always been rare here and belongs to an older generation.
Meaning
victory of the people
The meaning belongs to Nicholas, from the Greek nike, victory, and laos, the people. The endings added along the way — -ette in French, -etta in Italian — carry affection rather than sense, and the loss of the first syllable is simply what happens to long names in daily speech.

Pronouncing Coletta
koh-LET-uh
Three syllables, stress in the middle, which the doubled t signals. French Colette has two syllables with the weight at the back; the Italian spelling adds a vowel and keeps the emphasis where it was.

The trade-off
- Three quite different short forms are available, one of them currently very well used.
- It has a documented fifteenth-century reformer behind it with a real biography.
- The Italian spelling is standard rather than an American variation.
- Three open syllables sit well after almost any surname.
- Colette is far commoner in English-speaking countries and will be written instead.
- It belongs to an older American generation, which is a virtue to some ears and a datedness to others.
- Cole, the obvious short form, currently reads as a boy's name to most Americans.
