Beethoven wrote Fur Elise in 1810 and it was not published until forty years after his death. Nobody knows who Elise was. The likeliest explanation is that the editor misread the composer's handwriting and the dedication was to Therese Malfatti, whose papers the manuscript was found among.

Where it comes from

The story of Elysse

The manuscript of the bagatelle now known as Fur Elise was found in 1867 by Ludwig Nohl among the papers of Therese Malfatti, a young woman Beethoven had known and reportedly proposed to in 1810, the year the piece was written. Nohl published it with the title Fur Elise, said the autograph read that, and then the manuscript disappeared. It has never been seen since. Beethoven's handwriting was famously difficult, and the standard theory is that Therese was misread as Elise, which would make the piece's title an editorial error that has stuck to one of the most played pieces of music in the world. Other candidates have been proposed, including a singer named Elisabeth Rockel. Without the manuscript the question cannot be settled, and the name attached to the piece may belong to nobody at all.

Meaning

Hebrew Elisheva, my God is an oath

Elysse is a respelling of Elise, the French short form of Elisabeth, from Hebrew Elisheva, joining eli, my God, to sheva, an oath or seven; the second element is genuinely disputed. The y and doubled s are American respellings that do not change the sound. The peak of this spelling is 1987.

Elysse sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1987, with 35 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Elysse went to 10 girls in 2025, but Elisse is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 24, which makes it the 936th most-given girls’ name of the year — 8,521 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 66,969 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 160,727 for Elysse itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Ellie works as a short form and is widely used.
  • Elizabeth is available as the formal version.
  • The stressed ending gives it a firm final beat.
What to consider
  • Elise and Elyse are both commoner spellings.
  • The final s is voiced by some speakers and not by others.
  • It will be spelled out on introduction.
