Demontae
Masculine
The -ae in Demontae says ay, and in the words English borrowed it from it says ee. Algae, larvae, antennae and formulae all end in a Latin plural pronounced ee — so the naming system took the digraph and reassigned its value outright.

Our story of Demontae
Borrowing a spelling and changing what it says is ordinary, but it is worth noticing when it happens in front of you. The digraph ae came into English through Latin, where it stood for a diphthong that had already flattened to a plain e by the classical period; English learned words kept it and said ee in plurals and e elsewhere. Modern American naming needed a way to write a final stressed ay that would not be read as a silent e, and the options were limited: -ay looked plain, -é needed an accent no keyboard supplied, and -e alone would be silent. So -ae was taken and assigned the ay value, on the model of the French -ée and by analogy with the -ai of Thai and Chai. Demontae, Jontae, Kevontae and Deontae all use it, and every one of them contradicts what the digraph does in algae. The name peaks in 2000.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No inherited meaning. De- is a created prefix; Mont- is drawn from French mont, a hill, by way of Montell and Montrell; the -ae ending marks a final stressed ay. In Latin plurals borrowed into English the same digraph is said ee, and in the older learned words it represents a Greek diphthong. Demontae has no documented reading.
