Where it comes from

The story of Dayton

Jonathan Dayton of New Jersey signed the Constitution in 1787 and was later Speaker of the House; he and three partners bought a large tract in the Ohio country, and the settlement founded there in 1796 took his name. The city became a manufacturing center and the home of the Wright brothers. Its use as a given name follows the general American movement of place names into first names, and it is used for both sexes; the female side has its best year in 2002, later than the male one, which is the usual pattern for a surname name crossing over.

ditch farmstead, or Deighton's farm

The English surname Dayton descends from places called Deighton in Yorkshire, generally read as Old English dic, a ditch or dyke, plus tun, a farmstead. A second route derives it from a personal name plus tun. The American city is named for a man who bore the surname, so the given name arrives at three removes: element, place, surname, person, city, name.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A real American city with a documented and quite specific history behind it.
  • The -ton ending sits comfortably in current American naming.
  • Fully unisex, which some families count as an advantage.
What to consider
  • It is more common for boys than girls in the United States.
  • The Ohio city is the first association for most Americans.
  • The -ton family is closely dated to the last thirty years.
