The story of Cortney
Latin cohors, cohortis meant an enclosed yard, and the semantic history is a good demonstration of how institutional vocabulary grows out of farming. From the yard came the group of soldiers billeted in one, giving cohort, a tenth of a legion. From the yard came also the enclosed space of a great house, and then the household itself, and then the ruler's household, which is a court in the political sense. Because the ruler dispensed justice in person, a court became a place of judgment, and courtier, courteous and courtesy all descend from the manners appropriate to the household. Meanwhile the enclosed yard sense survived directly, giving courtyard, and was applied to marked playing areas for real tennis and then lawn tennis. Every one of those senses is alive in English at once.

French Courtenay, a place name
Cortney is a respelling of Courtney, from Courtenay, the name of places in northern France, from a Gallo-Roman personal name plus a suffix meaning estate. A competing derivation reads it as court nez, short nose, a Norman nickname. Both are proposed and neither is settled. The male peak of this spelling is 1977.

The Arnulfo test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Cortney's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Arnulfo climbed just as high around 1951, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Arnulfo's path sketches the road Cortney is walking now.
