Where it comes from

The story of Corinthian

Ancient Corinth was a rich trading city and the Greek phrase not every man can afford to go to Corinth reflected both its expense and its reputation. English took the adjective in the seventeenth century for a dissolute young man about town — Shakespeare uses it in that sense — and it kept the meaning through the Regency. Then the sporting sense took over: a Corinthian was an amateur of independent means who played for love rather than money, and the Corinthian Football Club, founded in 1882, embodied the ideal so completely that the word now carries only that. Same city, opposite implication. The American given name peaks in 1974.

Meaning

"Of Corinth", a Greek city

From Corinth, the city on the isthmus linking the Peloponnese to mainland Greece, whose own name is pre-Greek and of unrecovered meaning. The Corinthian order is the most ornate of the three classical column orders. Paul's two letters to the Corinthians are among the longest in the New Testament. The word's English senses derive from the city's ancient reputation for wealth and license.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It carries a specific city with a long documented history.
  • Corin and Cor work as short forms.
  • It is unmistakable and unlikely to be shared.
What to consider
  • Four syllables is long for American everyday use.
  • The word has carried opposite meanings in English.
  • It reads as an adjective rather than a name.
