Che is a verbal tic that became a name. In Argentina che is an all-purpose interjection meaning something like hey or mate, and Ernesto Guevara used it so constantly that Cubans took to calling him by it — so the world's most reproduced revolutionary is known by a filler word.

The story of Che
Nicknames from speech habits are not rare, but few become world-famous. Guevara was Argentine among Cubans and Mexicans, and the word marked him instantly as a foreigner, which is exactly why it stuck. He signed documents as Che, and the Cuban government issued banknotes bearing that signature. Alberto Korda's 1960 photograph, published widely after Guevara's death in 1967, made the image and the name inseparable. As an American given name Che appears from the late 1960s and peaks in 1974, a curve that follows the poster rather than the politics.

Argentine Spanish interjection: "hey, mate"
Che is a form of address and an interjection used throughout Argentina, Uruguay and parts of Bolivia and Paraguay. Its origin is disputed: proposals include Guaraní, Mapuche and Valencian Catalan, where xe is a similar interjection. Ernesto Guevara acquired it as a nickname in Guatemala and Mexico because of his habitual use of it, and it became his public name after the Cuban revolution.

The Genaro test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Che's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Genaro climbed just as high around 1936, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Genaro's path sketches the road Che is walking now.
Che sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
