The story of Chason
The hazzan's role grew as synagogue liturgy became musically elaborate, and by the Middle Ages it was a professional office requiring a trained voice and a command of the traditional modes. Because the prayers were long and the congregation often could not read, the cantor carried the service. Surnames from the role appear across Europe and the Middle East — Chazan in Eastern Europe, Hazan in the Sephardi world, Cantor as the German and English translation. Chason as an American given name is recent and peaks in 1982, by which point the surname connection is unlikely to be what most families have in mind.

Hebrew "cantor"; or an American formation on Chase
Hebrew hazzan originally named a supervisor or overseer and came to mean the prayer leader who chants the liturgy. It gave the Jewish surnames Chazan, Hazan, Cantor and Kazan. The American given name Chason may instead be built on Chase with the -on ending, and the record does not distinguish. Cohen, Levy, Segal and Katz are the other well-known Jewish surnames naming a religious status.

The Catalino test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Chason's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Catalino climbed just as high around 1949, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Catalino's path sketches the road Chason is walking now.
Chason sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
