Chael
Masculine · “Hebrew”
Michael is a question in three parts: mi, who; cha, like; el, God. Cut the front off and you keep like and God and lose the question. Chael is the answer half of the name without the asking half, which is an unusual thing for a clipping to do.

The story of Chael
Aphesis, the loss of an unstressed opening syllable, is one of the most productive processes in English naming, and it operates on sound alone with no regard for what the syllable was carrying. Sebastian gives Bastian and Baz. Andrew gives Drew. Elizabeth gives Beth and Liza. Alexander gives Xander. Hieronymus gives Ronnie in Dutch. In every case the surviving portion is the stressed part and after it, because that is what the ear holds onto. Michael is stressed on the first syllable in English, which normally protects it, but the American short form Chael arises from the spelling and from the second half of the written name rather than from the spoken stress. The result is a clipping that happens to sever a grammatical unit, keeping the predicate and discarding the question word, which is the sort of thing only a written language can do.

Hebrew, like God
Chael is a clipped form of Michael, Hebrew Mikha'el, who is like God. Removing the first syllable removes the interrogative mi, leaving the elements for like and God. Losing the front of a name is a regular English change, the same one that gave Bastian from Sebastian and Drew from Andrew. The American peak is 2013.

Chael's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Vittorio climbed just as high around 1969, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Vittorio's path sketches the road Chael is walking now.
