The story of Vittorio
Victor was a common name among early Christians, who read it as victory over death rather than over an enemy, and several popes and a great many saints carried it. Italian made Vittorio, and two kings of a united Italy bore it in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, which fixed it as a national name. It reached American records with Italian emigration and appears steadily through the mid-twentieth century.
Meaning
conqueror, victor
From Latin victor, one who has won, built on vincere, to conquer; the same root gives victory, convince and evict, and the name was taken up by early Christians for its sense of spiritual triumph.

The Siegfried test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Vittorio's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Siegfried climbed just as high around 1926, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Siegfried's path sketches the road Vittorio is walking now.
Vittorio sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A settled meaning that could hardly be plainer or stronger.
- Vic and Vito are both ready short forms, in two languages.
- Every letter is said, so Italian and Spanish speakers read it correctly at once.
- Victor is far better known in English and will be assumed.
- Eight letters and four syllables is a great deal for early handwriting.
- The Italian royal association is strong and, in Italy, politically mixed.
