The story of Heber
Ever is an ancestor in the genealogies of Genesis and his name has been linked to the word Hebrew since antiquity, though scholars argue about it. English Bibles write him Heber. Quite separately, Éber is one of the sons of Míl in the Irish origin legend, from whom the Gaels are said to descend. Both lines reached America — the biblical one through Protestant naming and the Irish one through emigration — and Latter-day Saint families use it in numbers.

one who crosses over
Hebrew Ever is generally connected to a root meaning to cross over, and an old proposal derives the word Hebrew from it — a proposal that is debated. The Irish Éber is a separate name from the founding legend of the Gaels and has its own uncertain derivation.

The trade-off
- Two documented ancestries, Hebrew and Irish, both genuinely old.
- Five letters and two syllables, quick to write.
- Real nineteenth-century American use behind it.
- It is strongly associated with one American religious community and one region.
- The English and Spanish pronunciations share almost nothing.
- The connection to the word Hebrew is proposed rather than established.
