Where it comes from

The story of Camdon

William Camden published Britannia in Latin in 1586, a county-by-county description of Britain combining topography, history, antiquities and inscriptions, and it went through six editions in his lifetime and defined the study of the British past for two centuries. He was headmaster of Westminster School, taught Ben Jonson, and founded the chair of history at Oxford that still carries his name. Camden Place in Chislehurst was named for him because he lived there. Charles Pratt, Lord Chancellor in the 1760s, acquired the house and took the title Earl Camden. His son developed land north of London in the 1790s, and Camden Town took the family name. So the borough, the market, the tube station and the American given name descend from a sixteenth-century antiquarian who never had anything to do with the place.

About 1 boy in 94,893 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 244,011 for Camdon itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
