The story of Breyon
Brian mac Cennetig rose from the kingship of a minor Munster people to overlordship of most of Ireland, taking hostages from the northern kings and having himself styled emperor of the Irish in the Book of Armagh. At Clontarf on Good Friday 1014 his forces defeated an alliance including the Dublin Norse and the king of Leinster, and Brian, by then in his seventies, was killed in his tent after the fighting. Later tradition turned the battle into a national war against foreign invaders; modern historians read it as a Munster king suppressing a Leinster revolt in which Norse Dubliners fought on both sides. Either way the name became one of the most used in Ireland, was carried into Brittany and England, and reached America in the twentieth century with no meaning attached to it that anybody can verify.
