The story of Deryck
Mahler died leaving his Tenth Symphony in sketches, and for decades it was thought unperformable. Deryck Cooke, a BBC music scholar, worked through the manuscript and produced a complete performing version, which orchestras now play around the world. Derek came into English through the Low Countries from Theodoric, and Deryck spells it with a y and a ck that change nothing in the sound; no record explains who first chose them.
