The story of Baldemar
The Germanic system worked by recombination within a family: a son might take one element from his father and one from his mother, producing a name that was new but visibly related to both. That is why the compounds so often fail to mean anything sensible — bold-famous, wolf-council, bright-battle — and why the tradition could generate so many names from such a small vocabulary. The system broke down when Christian saints' names took over from the ninth century onward, and only the most successful compounds survived. Baldemar reached Spain with the Visigoths and became an ordinary Spanish name; the American figures peak in 1946 with Mexican-American families.
Meaning
Germanic "bold and famous"
From bald, bold or brave, plus mar or mer, famous or renowned. The mar element also closes Waldemar, Dietmar and Volkmar, and opens Marbod. Bald opens Baldwin and closes Archibald and Theobald. Neither element is fixed to a position; Germanic naming combined a set of prestige words freely, and the resulting compound was not required to make a coherent phrase.

The Astor test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Baldemar's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Astor climbed just as high around 1912, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Astor's path sketches the road Baldemar is walking now.
Baldemar sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
