The story of Aysia
Greek writers used Asia first for a district of Lydia and then for everything east of the Aegean, and Europe for the land to the north and west. The standard explanation traces both to Semitic roots used by traders on the eastern Mediterranean coast: asu, to rise, for the direction the sun comes from, and erebu, to set, for the direction it goes. Herodotus already found the naming unsatisfactory and said he could not understand why one landmass had three names or who gave them. The boundary between the two has never been natural and has been drawn variously at the Don, the Volga and the Urals; the current line is a convention of the eighteenth century. So two of the seven continents carry names that mean nothing more than east and west, given by people who lived at the point where the two meet.

Akkadian asu, to rise
Aysia is a respelling of Asia. The continent's name is generally derived from Akkadian asu, to go out or rise, used of the sun, with Europe from erebu, to enter or set. Both derivations are widely accepted and neither is certain; the Greeks took the names from Phoenician or Assyrian use. The peak of this spelling is 2003.
