Shakespeare invented Jessica for The Merchant of Venice in 1596, probably from the biblical Iscah, a name mentioned once in Genesis. Four hundred years later its ending is a productive American suffix, and Jennica is one of the names built on it. Two English writers, Shakespeare and Swift, between them supplied a great deal of the modern American ending stock.

Where it comes from

Our story of Jennica

Our reading is that a small number of individual writers are responsible for a surprising share of the modern name stock, and their inventions are traceable. Shakespeare gave English Jessica, Olivia, Miranda, Imogen and Perdita, of which the first three are now enormous and the last two are not. Swift gave Vanessa in 1713 by splicing a surname to a pet name. Spenser gave Gloriana and Amoretta. Mistral gave Mireille. Anne Rice gave Lestat. In each case the name is invented, is attached to a character, and enters general use decades or centuries later. What happens after that is the same in every case: the name becomes large, its ending detaches, and the ending becomes available for building new names. Jessica peaked in the 1980s and produced -ica; Vanessa produced -essa; Aaliyah produced -iyah. The mechanism does not care where the original came from.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Jennica joins the Jenn stem, from Jennifer, to the -ica ending drawn from Jessica. Jessica appears first in The Merchant of Venice and is generally taken as Shakespeare's adaptation of Iscah, a name in Genesis 11 whose meaning is unknown. Neither element carries meaning in the compound. It peaks in 1987.

Jennica sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1987, with 78 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jennica went to 12 girls in 2025, but Jennika, Jenica and Jenicka and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 45, which makes it the 915th most-given girls’ name of the year — 7,447 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 35,717 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 133,939 for Jennica itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
