Jenika
Feminine · “white phantom”
Jennifer was a Cornish name and nothing else — unknown in the rest of England, a local form of Guinevere that had survived at the far end of the country. Then Bernard Shaw gave it to a character in 1906, and within sixty years it was the most given name in America.

The story of Jenika
Guinevere reached English through French romance and stayed literary. Jenifer took the Cornish road instead, surviving as an ordinary local name in one county while the rest of England forgot it entirely. Shaw picked it up for a play and readers picked it up from him, and the name then did something almost nothing else has done: it went from regional curiosity to national default within two generations. What follows a name that common is respelling, because parents who like the sound but not the ubiquity change the ending. Jenika, Jenica, Jennika and Jenna all come out of that pressure rather than out of Cornwall.
Meaning
white phantom, or fair one
Through Cornish Jenifer from Welsh Gwenhwyfar, the name of Arthur's queen: gwen, white or fair or blessed, with hwyfar, smooth or phantom. Guinevere is the same name by the French road. The -ika ending on this spelling is a Slavic-style diminutive borrowed for sound, and adds nothing to the meaning.

About 1 girl in 35,717 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 200,908 for Jenika itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Carlissa test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jenika's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Carlissa climbed just as high around 1966, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Carlissa's path sketches the road Jenika is walking now.
