Anglo-Saxon England was full of elf-names. Aelfred, Aelfwine, Aelfgifu, Aelfric: the elves were beings whose goodwill mattered, and naming a child for them was a practical arrangement, not a decoration. Avery is the Norman French descendant of one of those names.

The story of Averee
Elves in Old English belief were powerful and ambiguous rather than small and charming, and the element aelf appears in a large number of serious names; the sense is closer to being under supernatural protection than to being whimsical. Alfred the Great carried one of them. Norman French smoothed the name into Alfrey and Avery, which became an English surname, and American naming took the surname for boys and then, from the 1990s, for girls in far larger numbers. Averee is a respelling from that second wave, doubling the final e in the way the -ee family does, and its best year in United States records is 2016.

elf counsel
Avery is usually derived from Alfred, Old English Aelfraed, combining aelf, elf, with raed, counsel or advice. A second derivation takes it from the Germanic Alberic, elf plus ric, ruler, which also gives Aubrey. Both are elf-names and both produced Norman French forms that English took as surnames. The -ee ending of this spelling is modern and carries no meaning.

The Sonnie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Averee's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Sonnie climbed just as high around 1944, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Sonnie's path sketches the road Averee is walking now.
Averee sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
