The story of Sonnie
Word-names given from affection were ordinary in American English through the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries: Birdie, Bubba, Sissy, Sonny and Junior all appear on birth records rather than only in conversation. Sonnie belongs with them, and its use for girls follows the same logic, since the word was applied to small children generally before it narrowed to boys. In the same decades Russian Sonia arrived with immigration and gave the spelling a second parent, so a girl called Sonnie in the middle of the last century might have either behind her.

an affectionate word for a child, or a short form of Sonia
Two roads. The English word sonny is a diminutive of son, used affectionately for any small child regardless of sex, and it appears on American records as a given name from the nineteenth century. Separately, Sonia and Sondra were often shortened to Sonnie in the same decades, and Sonia comes through Russian from the Greek sophia, wisdom.

The Malva test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Sonnie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Malva climbed just as high around 1921, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Malva's path sketches the road Sonnie is walking now.
Sonnie sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is warm on first hearing, which is rare in a name and hard to design deliberately.
- It has a documented American record going back more than a century.
- Sonia and Sondra are available as formal expansions if one is ever wanted.
- The word sonny reads as a boys' name to most Americans now, so the child will be misfiled at times.
- It is a homophone of sunny, which will be assumed as the spelling.
- Nickname-names can feel light on a formal document unless a longer name stands behind them.
