Where it comes from

The story of Lexa

Alexandra was already an old name when Alexander the Great made it a royal one, and it spread with Greek and then with the Orthodox church across the Slavic world, where it produced Sasha, Sanya and Lesya. Western Europe took it too, shortening it to Sandra in Italy and to Alix in France. Lexa is a recent English clipping from the Lexi and Lexie family, and it was helped along in the two-thousand-tens by a television character who carried it, which is how a great many short forms become full names.

Meaning

defender of people

Through Alexandra from Greek alexein, to defend or ward off, joined to aner, andros, man or person. Lexa carries the meaning of the full name; the syllable alone means nothing.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Four letters, two syllables and no ambiguity in the spelling.
  • Alexandra is available as a formal expansion whenever one is wanted.
  • It connects to a name used in a dozen languages, so it travels without adjustment.
What to consider
  • Lexi is far commoner and will be written instead by people who half-heard it.
  • As a short form promoted to a full name, it offers nothing further to shorten.
  • It is also a well-known brand of voice assistant in near-rhyme, which children notice.
