The story of Alysia
Adalheidis was a Frankish noblewoman's name that Old French smoothed to Aliz and Adelaide kept in full. English took Aliz as Alice, and Latin documents wrote it back as Alicia, which Spanish then adopted and made ordinary. The American twentieth century did the rest, producing Alisha, Alysia, Alicia and Alesha as spellings of one sound, each family choosing the look it liked best. The y in this one belongs to the same habit that gave Jasmyn and Kaitlyn their letters.

noble kind, noble sort
Alicia is the Latinized form of Alice, itself from Old French Aliz, from Germanic Adalheidis: adal, noble, and heid, kind or sort. That line is well documented. Whether the y-spelling belongs to it or to the Greek alysis, a chain, is another matter, and no source supports the Greek reading as an origin for the name.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Alysia went to 28 girls in 2025, but Alicia, Alisia and Alycia are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 750, which makes it the 395th most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,363 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 2,143 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 57,402 for Alysia itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Karolyn test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Alysia's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Karolyn climbed just as high around 1941, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Karolyn's path sketches the road Alysia is walking now.
Alysia sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
