Alisia is one of a crowd of spellings for a sound that arrived in English through Latin, French and Spanish in turn. Underneath is Adalheid, the Germanic noble kind, which shed a syllable in every century it passed through until only Alice was left; Alicia and Alisia are the Latinized form coming back the other way.

When was the name Alisia most popular?

Alisia peaked in 1984, reaching #1355 nationally. Today it ranks #4987, 3,632 places below that high. See the whole 1984 chart.

Where it comes from

The story of Alisia

The path is unusually clear: a long Germanic compound, shortened by French speech, taken into English, then re-lengthened by Latin-writing clerks who needed a formal version for documents. Spanish took the clerks' spelling and made it ordinary. Italian has Alisia as a genuine regional form. In American records the single-s spelling appears alongside Alicia, Alysia and Alisha, all of them said much the same way and none of them clearly standard.

Meaning

noble kind; of noble sort

Germanic adal, noble, joined to heid, kind or sort. Old French reduced Adalheidis to Aliz, English took that as Alice, and medieval Latin documents wrote it back as Alicia, which Spanish and Italian adopted.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Alisia went to 26 girls in 2025, but Alicia, Alysia and Alycia are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 750, which makes it the 395th most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,592 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 2,143 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 61,818 for Alisia itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It carries a documented Germanic name with one of the most productive histories in Europe.
  • Ali and Sia are ready short forms and both are complete names.
  • It has a genuine Italian home as well as being an American respelling.
What to consider
  • Alicia, Alisia, Alysia and Alisha are said almost identically and written four ways.
  • Two pronunciations circulate and the spelling settles neither.
  • It reads as belonging to a particular stretch of American decades.
