Where it comes from

The story of Alycia

Alice was one of the standard medieval English names, out of fashion by the eighteenth century and revived hard in the nineteenth — helped considerably by Carroll's Alice, published in 1865. The Latin-looking Alicia entered English separately and became common in America in the second half of the twentieth century. Its high point was the 1970s and 1980s, and the respellings crested just after: Alycia, Alysha, Alesha and Alisha all appear in the same decades. Alycia's American peak in 1990 sits at the far side of the family's run, which is the usual position for a variant.

Meaning

Noble kind, of noble sort

From the Germanic Adalheidis, from adal, noble, and heid, kind or sort. Old French shortened it to Aaliz and Alix, English took Alice, and Latinized forms produced Alicia and Alisha. The reading is settled. The y of Alycia is a twentieth-century American respelling with no separate history.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Alycia went to 24 girls in 2025, but Alicia, Alysia and Alisia are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 750, which makes it the 395th most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,843 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 2,143 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 66,969 for Alycia itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
