The story of Sonnie
American English developed an unusually rich stock of kinship names used in address, and several of them hardened into names in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries: a first son called Junior, a second called Bubba, a boy called Sonny by a grandmother until nobody used anything else. The step from address to certificate happens when a family registers the name they actually use, and it was common practice in the American South and in immigrant communities where a formal name was already carried by someone else. Sonnie's best year on record is 1897, and both spellings, Sonny and Sonnie, ran together throughout.
Meaning
son, boy
From the English word son with the affectionate -y or -ie ending, used as a form of address to a boy by an older person. The word itself is Old English sunu, from the Germanic and ultimately Indo-European word for a son, which is one of the oldest recoverable words in the language family. As a name it carries the address rather than the noun.
