Where it comes from

The story of Avari

Avery arrived in American girls' naming from the surname in the 1990s and rose very fast, which produced the usual crop of respellings: Avarie, Averi, Avari, Avry. The terminal -i is the most strongly female-marked of the available endings and the least used, which is why this one is rare. Separately, Tolkien built a word Avari for the elves who declined the journey to Valinor, from a root meaning unwilling; since Avery means elf counsel by an entirely different route, a name that means elf and a word that names elves have converged on one spelling by accident. Avari's best year in United States records is 2006.

Meaningscholars disagree

elf counsel, with a modern ending

Avery descends through Norman French from Old English Aelfraed, elf plus counsel, or from the related Alberic, elf plus ruler. The -i ending of this spelling is a modern American substitution and carries no meaning. The resemblance to the Quenya word Avari, the Unwilling, in Tolkien's legendarium is entirely coincidental and is not an origin.

Avari sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2006, with 76 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Avari went to 17 girls in 2025, but Avary is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 37, which makes it the 923rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,623 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 43,440 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 94,545 for Avari itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Ava and Ari are both complete, current and independently popular short forms.
  • A thousand-year-old Old English etymology behind the sound.
  • The -i ending marks it clearly as a girl's name.
What to consider
  • Avery is the overwhelming standard spelling.
  • Two stress patterns circulate for this spelling.
  • Averi, Avarie and Avari all split the records.
