The story of Arif
The two-verb distinction exists in several European languages too — French savoir and connaître, Spanish saber and conocer, German wissen and kennen — and English lost it, which is why English speakers have to say know about and know personally. Arabic keeps it and builds a vocabulary of spiritual attainment on top: the ʿārif has maʿrifa, and the classical Sufi manuals distinguish carefully between the scholar and the knower, sometimes to the scholar's disadvantage. The name carries the honorable sense in ordinary use without the technical one. The American figures for Arif peak in 1976, with South Asian and Turkish immigration.
