The story of Antone
American whaling ships took on crew in the Azores and Cape Verde from the early nineteenth century, because the islands lay on the route to the southern grounds and the men were experienced boat handlers. Many settled in New Bedford and Fall River, and Portuguese immigration to that corner of New England continued for a century afterwards. The names came with them and were anglicized on arrival: António became Antone, Manuel stayed Manuel, João became John. Antone is distinctive enough to serve as a marker of that community in the records. The American figures peak in 1891.
Meaningnot established
Not established — a Roman family name of probably Etruscan origin
Antonius has no secure etymology and probably came into Latin from Etruscan. The readings often given — priceless, praiseworthy, flower — are later inventions. Antone is an anglicized spelling of Portuguese António, used widely in Portuguese-American communities and recorded in that form in American censuses and church registers from the nineteenth century onward.
