Anijah
Feminine
The j in Anijah is doing a job nobody remembers giving it. In Elijah and Hezekiah the j spells a Hebrew y, a convention inherited from Latin, and modern coinages that borrow the -ijah ending are carrying a four-hundred-year-old transliteration rule they have no use for.

Our story of Anijah
Latin had no letter for the sound English writes as y at the start of a word, so it used i, and when i acquired a tail and became j the spelling stayed while the pronunciation drifted. That is why Jerusalem, Jesus, Jacob and Elijah all begin or end with a j that was a y in Hebrew, and it is why English-speaking readers say Elijah with a j sound that no Hebrew speaker ever made. Modern American coinages then borrowed the ending wholesale, giving Anijah, Amijah, Danijah and Nevaeh's many neighbors, and the j came with it. What arrives in these names is not a Hebrew element but a Roman spelling habit that survived the loss of everything it was designed for. Anijah's best year in United States records is 2005.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No inherited etymology. The -ijah ending is borrowed by sound from Elijah, Adonijah and Hezekiah, where it represents the shortened divine name yah preceded by a vowel. In this name it is a decorative ending with no content, and the An- opening is a free syllable. Glosses offered from Hebrew for the whole are retrofits.
Pronouncing Anijah
uh-NY-uh
Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The j is silent in the sense that it spells a y glide rather than an English j; a reader who says it as a hard j produces a different name.
