Where it comes from

Our story of Angelly

Naming devices spread by looking foreign in the right way. Dominican, Venezuelan and Central American naming of the last forty years has borrowed heavily from the look of English and French: doubled consonants where Spanish would use one, terminal y where Spanish would use i, and endings like -lly, -nne and -sha that no Spanish word carries. The effect inside those communities is not foreignness but modernity, which is exactly what the borrowed -eigh and -lyn do inside American English. Angelly takes a completely ordinary Spanish name and applies the device, which marks the child's generation precisely without changing what the name says. Its best year in United States records is 2008.

Meaning

messenger

Spanish angel, from Greek angelos, a messenger, which was applied to divine messengers only after the word already existed for human ones. The -lly ending is a modern Latin American naming device with no meaning; it functions as a decorative feminising suffix and has no counterpart in standard Spanish orthography.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Angelly went to 17 girls in 2025, but Angely, Angeli and Angelli are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 164, which makes it the 796th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,750 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 9,800 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 94,545 for Angelly itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Greek meaning through a completely familiar word.
  • Angie is a ready and universally understood everyday form.
  • The ending marks a specific and living naming tradition.
What to consider
  • The doubled l is not standard Spanish orthography.
  • Angely, Angelly and Angeli all circulate and split the records.
  • English speakers will use a hard g rather than an h.
