Aldin
Masculine · “Arabic al-din”
Saladin, Aladdin, Nasruddin. All three end in the same Arabic word: al-din, the faith. Salah al-Din is righteousness of the faith, Ala al-Din is nobility of the faith, and European ears heard the whole phrase as a single name. Aldin is what remains when a Bosnian family keeps the shape and drops the phrase.

The story of Aldin
The al-din compounds were originally titles, not names. A ruler or scholar earned a laqab, an honorific, and Salah al-Din, the sultan who took Jerusalem in 1187, was born Yusuf. Europeans meeting these figures took the title for the name, which is why he is Saladin in every English history book and Yusuf in almost none. The same thing happened to Ala al-Din, whose title reached Europe through the Arabian Nights as Aladdin. Over centuries the titles became ordinary given names across the Muslim world. In Bosnia, where Islam arrived with the Ottomans and the language is Slavic, the Arabic naming stock was reshaped again: long compounds were shortened, Slavic endings were added or dropped, and short modern names like Aldin, Adin, Amel and Edin were coined on the pattern. Aldin peaks in the American data in 2007.

Arabic al-din, the faith or the religion
The element al-din, the faith, is the second half of a large family of Arabic honorific compounds: Salah al-Din, Nur al-Din, Sayf al-Din, Shams al-Din, Ala al-Din. Aldin is a modern Bosnian name that echoes those compounds without reproducing any one of them, and it is also read simply as a short, current Bosnian name of the kind coined in the twentieth century. The English surname Aldin, from Old English eald, old, is unrelated.

The Adrion test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Aldin's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Adrion climbed just as high around 1971, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Adrion's path sketches the road Aldin is walking now.
