Adrion

The story of Adrion
Six popes have taken the name Adrian, and the fourth is the only Englishman ever elected. Nicholas Breakspear was born near St Albans around 1100, went abroad as a young man, rose through an Augustinian house in Provence and then the papal service, and was elected in December 1154. His pontificate is remembered for the coronation of Frederick Barbarossa, for a long quarrel with the Roman commune, and for the bull Laudabiliter, which is said to have granted Ireland to Henry II and whose authenticity has been argued over ever since. He died in 1159. No English candidate has come close since, which makes the name Adrian one of the few things in the English record attached to a genuinely singular event.
Meaning
Latin Hadrianus, from Hadria
Adrion is a respelling of Adrian, from Latin Hadrianus, a man of Hadria, a town in northern Italy that also gave the Adriatic Sea its name. The emperor Hadrian's family came from there. The -ion ending in this spelling replaces -ian without changing the sound, since the final syllable is unstressed. The peak of this spelling is 1971.
