The story of Arsen
Arsenios of Scetis was a Roman senator who became a desert monk, and his cult carried his name across the Greek-speaking world and into Armenia, Georgia and Russia. Armenian and Georgian both shortened it to Arsen, which became a standard name in each. It appears in American records from the early twentieth century, chiefly with Armenian families arriving in that period, and again more recently with emigration from the Caucasus.

The trade-off
- A settled Greek meaning and a documented record from the fourth century onward.
- Five letters and two syllables, easy to write and to say.
- Well established in Armenia and Georgia, so it has real communities behind it.
- In English the first five letters of arsenic are the same, and children will find it.
- The stress moves in English, so two readings will follow him.
- Arsen, Arseny and Arsenios are all used and relatives may prefer different ones.
