Where it comes from

The story of Alberta

Adalbert was a Frankish and Saxon name carried by saints and emperors, worn down in English to Albert and given an enormous boost in the nineteenth century by Queen Victoria's consort. Feminines followed everywhere: Alberta, Albertine, Albertina. One of Victoria's daughters carried Alberta among her names, and when the Canadian district was organized in 1882 it was named for her. The American women's name peaked around 1910.

Meaning

noble and bright

From the Germanic athal, 'noble', and beraht, 'bright'. Both elements were extremely productive in old Germanic naming — beraht also gives Bertha, Herbert and Robert — and the compound is transparent and undisputed.

Alberta sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1918, with 1,988 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is transparent and unambiguously positive in every language that uses it.
  • It is standard in Italian as well as English, so it crosses borders unchanged.
  • Albert stands behind it as a documented name reaching back to the Frankish court.
What to consider
  • The Canadian province is the first association for a great many people.
  • It is period-coded to the turn of the last century in American ears.
