Northumbrian Christianity is Irish, not Roman. Aidan came from Iona to Lindisfarne in 635 at the invitation of King Oswald, walked the kingdom on foot rather than riding, and converted the north of England — and Bede, a Roman-party writer, praised him despite disagreeing with him about Easter.

Where it comes from

The story of Adian

Oswald of Northumbria had been exiled among the Irish of Dál Riata and returned a Christian; when he took the throne he sent to Iona for a bishop. The first sent was too severe and went home; Aidan was sent instead and founded the monastery on Lindisfarne, from which Northumbria was converted. Bede, writing a century later from a firmly Roman position, records his disagreement with Aidan over the dating of Easter and then praises his character at length — an unusual concession in a partisan history. The Synod of Whitby in 664 settled the dispute for Rome, but the northern church remained Irish in its formation. Adian peaks in America in 2004.

Meaning

Irish "little fire"

From Aodhán, a diminutive of Aodh, an Irish god of fire and a common personal name — so the name means little fire or fiery one. Adian is a modern American respelling of Aidan with the vowels transposed. The name is genuinely old and continuously used in Ireland, unlike the large family of names that merely rhyme with it.

Adian sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2006, with 89 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Adian went to 10 boys in 2025, but Adyan and Adiyan are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 43, which makes it the 885th most-given boys’ name of the year — 6,794 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 39,723 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 170,808 for Adian itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
