Zeeshan
Masculine · “Arabic dhi shan”
Arabic builds titles with dhu, meaning possessor of. Dhu al-Qarnayn is the one with two horns, Dhu al-Fiqar is the name of a famous sword, and Dhu al-Hijja is the month that possesses the pilgrimage. Zeeshan is that construction: possessor of dignity, worn down through Persian and Urdu into a single word.

The story of Zeeshan
The dhu construction is one of the standard ways Arabic makes a descriptive title, and it works by asserting possession rather than quality: not the horned one but the one who has two horns, not the dignified one but the possessor of dignity. It is used for people, for months, for objects and, in the Quran, for a figure called Dhu al-Qarnayn whose identification has been argued over for fourteen centuries. Persian and Urdu borrowed the construction along with a great deal of Arabic vocabulary and simplified it: the sounds Persian lacks were replaced, dh becoming z, and the two words fused into one. That is why the same name appears as Zeeshan, Zishan and Zeshan and why its structure is invisible unless you know the Arabic behind it. The doubled ee is the South Asian romanisation of a long vowel.
Meaning
Arabic dhi shan, possessing dignity
From Arabic dhu or dhi, possessor of, and shan, dignity, rank or importance. The compound is used in Persian and Urdu as zi-shan or zeeshan, meaning dignified or of high rank. The initial consonant shifts from the Arabic dh to a z in Persian, which has no dh sound. It is a common name in Pakistan and among South Asian Muslim communities. It peaks in the American data in 2003.
